look at how happy dan is. he and amy turn one year older this month so we had a balls-out party to celebrate how rad they are. hypnotic was brought, cupcakes were thrown and the filth is still varnished across the apartment floor. the theme was young hollywood and people fully took part which was cool. i think the key to a good party theme is making sure girls think they can still look hot in their costumes. sorry for the gratuitous pics posted but it was a crazy good time.

this is the best picture to come out of the regatta/marina dance i went to while i was up at the cottage for the last week. have you ever been to something like this? it's basically like going to any suburban bar/club except you bring your children and grandparents. the crappy dj they hired was charming at first, but after he only played 20 seconds of unbrella, les took issue with the b'moustached man. he responded "eat shit, bitch". good times. a whole group of guys were going to fight the dj, but les told them not to worry about it. lake ties die hard. amy and sasha came up, we swam, got tans, kayaked (is that a word) talked about the pros and cons of vanity fair's snobbery.

- monster squad is out on dvd this week. i was obsessed with this movie as a kid, in large part because of my crush on rudy. it also taught me what the word virign meant. there's two rad clips here

- i wish really badly that i was at comic con right now. the annaul san diego nerd fest is in full swing, and it seems like the biggest news to come out of it so far is the return of michael on lost.

is everyone already done the seventh harry potter? i'm not. just started reading it last night and am only a few chapters in. it's actually one of the few times i've been happy to read at as moderate pace as i do cause i totally want to savour this thing. anyway, went to see OOTP on the weekend with duana. we wanted to get deathly hallows immediately after, but the line at indigo in the manulife was far too long.

1500 prisoners in the philippines learned the choreography to thriller in the video above. of course it's cool to watch because 1500 people doing anything choreographed usually is. but what really impresses me about this is what a creative idea it is as an activity for inmates. i'd never been impressed with dancers until i took some hip-hop classes for fun last winter with some friends. not only was it a fun way to spend an hour moving, but it left me in as good a headspace as any of the few physical things i actually love to do. does anyone know if canadian prisons have similar programs?

great weekend, despite having to work a lot of it. isn't this the best birthday surprise picture ever? was at the beaconsfield on saturday night. had a lot of fun, but why are people so into that place? i take issue with anywhere too crowded to walk through. anyway, don't work too hard on a monday, stop and read this stuff.

my friend chet just posted a really freaky story about an explosion that happened outside his work today in new york. turns it was just a steam pipe, but he (and probably everyone else in hearing distance) understandably assumed it was a terrorist attack. there a lot of reasons why i'm jealous of his life in nyc, but fear of dying in a politically motivated bombing isn't one of them. i don't think i'm naive about how dangerous the world can be, but i think we all feel relatively safe in toronto and i'm totally grateful for that.

i was lucky enough to get a ticket to see hairspray last night from dan and am happy to report it kicks exactly as much ass as you want it to. it never tries to be something it isn't (ahem, dreamgirls), and works perfectly. the highlight for me is nikki blonsky who manages to play tracy with equal parts of wicked confidence and hilarious teenage passion. her infatuation with the movie's local dance show is dead on, reminded me of sjp and helen hunt watching dance tv.

my only problem with the movie are my conflicted feelings about zac efron. a 19 year old should not be able to melt my heart like that.

know how every time you shop around the city you inevitably see some nice looking young person asking you to give a little bit of money to a dying child at sick kids and you smile or look down and feel bad because you need that money for smokes? well, today you get your revenge. blog t.o. alerted my to an article in the star that explains those people not only work for some third party organizations (ie. not sick kids), they're on commission.

this is some of the radest shit i've seen in a while. three minds alerted me to something called light graffiti. it uses small lights and slow exposure to create wicked pictures like this. if i ever figure out how to use my camera, expect to see a lot more of it.

this is the closest i've come to successfully experimenting with my camera. anyway, turns out amy isn't the only person you should avoid on the road. i agree that dying because you had to text while driving is a stupid way to bite it, but i think this study overlooks how dangerous it is trying to make an itrip work while you drive. those things suck

last night went to the drake with amy and dan. we met up with adam, conor and dylan for a night called summer lovin. it was comedy/music performed by real life couples and put on by holly and inessa. with a very little exception the whole night went really well. even technical problems kind of made me laugh

today i was shocked and horrified to learn that michael glatze is no longer gay. which is news to me because the mike i met at montreal pride a couple years ago was, indeed, very gay. he was a founding editor of now apparently defunct magazine young gay america (or YGA), creator of gayteensuicidedoc jim in bold, and boyfriend to the object of my affections in summer 2005.

mike's written some whacky "column" about breaking free from the shackles of homoness for some kind of news outlet called world net daily. it's full of stuff that sounds like this...

"driven to look for truth, because nothing felt right, I looked within. jesus christ repeatedly advises us not to trust anybody other than him. I did what he said, knowing that the kingdom of god does reside in the heart and mind of every man."

obviously, I think he's a fucking idiot, but these are clearly the words of someone with a very thin handle on his own identity. so I guess there's no real reason to hate, and everyone should feel kind of bad for him. be tee dubs, he's actually quite good looking, in a steve nash kind of way.

this week amy, adam and i went to one of the best shows i've been to in forever. amy had seen bocce (bow-ch-a not bah-chee, i think) before and insisted that i go to their show at sneaky dee's. these pictres really don't do them justice because they were really working their asses off. the sound is sort of like a rockier chromeo, and they're crazy dance machines. they're playing tiger bar at the end of july, i'll be there for sure.

spent the week off work at amy's family's cottage. dan, sasha, and adam came too. we were on lake simcoe, where i'd never been before. it's a huge lake and the island we stayed on is a reservation. native dudes sold us a 2-4, minus the 8 beers they snagged, for 50 dollars. not a great deal, but better than spending an afternoon in a car.

went to see rufus on monday night, and he was fine. lovely voice, obviously charming and all that. but here's the problem. when i met up with dan and sasha during the intermission, they really didn't want to sit through the second half of the show. the reason being, the stupid danforth music hall was so damn hot the show was totally ruined for them. i guess music venues don't have a/c to protect people's voices? either way, stupid to sell tickets to watch a show from a sauna. heard later he dressed in full drag for the encore.

remember when i thought i had some kind of right to say what people should go to at nxne? well, i ended up going to none of that. thankfully, it was because there was way too much other rad stuff to do. lainey's been in town and on thursday she was the special guest of something called smut soiree at roots. she basically dished everything about all the gossip you could ever want to know about. hating paris hilton was a common theme. dan was the moderator, they're a great pair. he should guest edit her blog sometime.

understandably, lainey's got some hardcore fans. champagne on the street wasn't enough, so we went to amber and then fran's.

friday eveyone came over and then we went to the drake. people there are kind of douchy, but none more than one of their bouncers who i overheard calling someone, no joke, "faggot".

amy and i went to see fraser young at the laugh resort on saturday. then line after line on queen st. we ended up at unit. in the morning hung out at a u of t park. perfect sunday.

this is my morning view on the way to work.

looks nice right? but as a friend of mine often mourns, the south-east corner of yonge and bloor (harvey's, city optical) is actually a really ugly sight in an otherwise attractive neighbourhood.

fortunately for everyone with eyes, that sucka's getting blown to bits.

this is the building that's going to be built in it's place. it's kind of a cheesy rendering, but i think the real thing will be a huge improvement.

last night i went to see casey from ohbijou play a solo show at the boat. turns out the solo show was really a group of singer/songwriters playing in turn to a far-too quiet crowd. casey's great, but we weren't in the mood to just sit still and listen, so we went to some random bar on dundas.

if you're looking for a good show and something to do this weekend, check out the track and field music fest in tantramar, which is just outside guelph. lots of rad acts like great lake swimmers, sebastien grainger, and final fantasy for a $20 donation.

saturday night was a party called santa cruz at captain john's restaurant. it's supposed to be a singles night for indie kids. people wear a numbered tag and if you're interested you can leave a note for them in a little mail box with the same number.

went to see bright eyes last night at massey hall. he sounded pretty effing amazing. huge group of musicians on stage, beautiful songs, and jack white-style hairdo's. still was surprised he could pack a venue that size with $50 seats.
heard screaming from the audience - "CHUG"

i'm not super familiar with the music, and they weren't the kind of songs you fall in love with after hearing live for the first time. but what blew my mind a bit was was the stage production. the backdrop was flooded with images from what looked like an overhead projector, created live as the show went on - an in-and-out of focus ouija board, finger painting with food colouring, and TIDDLEY WINKS! Kind of hard to expain but it looked rad.

opening acts gillian welch and oakley hall joined conor on stage to close the show, but i didn't actully see them perform their own sets though. that's because i was at the senator being horrified by a bum fight that amy and ryan thought was funny enough to photograph, which i thought was funny.
